For the past 2 days my husband (age 57), has complained of a noise like "hammering on metal" while he is laying in bed, but fully awake. This occurs in the morning. Any ideas?

I have a 1 month old baby that has been diagnosed with a severe left ear hearing loss. She has had 2 ABRs performed since
birth. She was born 40th weeks with no medical condition .There is no family history of hearing loss. Her ABRs showed normal functioning right ear. On his left ear
it showed wave V identified at 80 and 90dB with no lower intensities noted.
My questions are:
1) Could She benefit from a hearing aid in the left ear?
2) Are there any literature out there for pros and cons of unilateral hearing aids for infants?
3) Is there any cure for this?

Hello,
Just wondering if this condition is hereditary? I am a 49 year old female that was diagnosed with otosclerosis in my early 20's. I have had surgery on both ears. I am now deaf in one ear and wear a hearing aid in the other.
My son age 26 is hard of hearing, and his 7 yr old daughter is having trouble with her ears now too.
I would appreciate any information on this.
Thank you,
Nona Honea

In 2 years child with Behavior Observation Audiometry: No response to any auditory stimuli. Giving impression of hearing loss.
ABR findings are: Cochlear microphonics present but none other wave form[ with almost a straight line], on reversing the polarity of stimulus the polarity of CM also reversed. On repeating the ABR after 2 weeks the Cochlear microphonics disappeared, no wave morphology observed.
Questions:1. Can it be a case of auditory neuropathy? If yes, Why the findings were not repeatable after 2 weeks.

Hi from Israel
Thank you for offering this service.
I'm 44 yrs old. My problem is that when I hear a loud sound of any kind – for example, my 16 yr old scream at me, a bus whizz by me, a man in a store raising his voice – my left ear begins to vibrate and makes a noise that sounds like the static you hear between radio stations. I find this vibration painful and hard on my nerves. I had a proffessional hearing test done with an audiometer and the test came out normal. However, when the tester tried to make me hear high frequencies in my left ear, I stopped her because I found the experience to be too painful.
I should add that I also suffer from dizziness when going on bus trips, and from feeling out of balance when climbing even a low ladder. I'm sure this is BPPV. I've learned to live with it. What I find hard to live with is the pain that I have in my left ear when I hear loud sounds. The BPPV I can tolerate.
I have no other symptoms, and my hearing is fine.
There's a professor in Israel who treats such things, but he costs a small fortune and I can't afford him. If you have any idea what I suffer from, please tell me. I'm hoping that I'll be able to find information on the internet about whatever it is. If I can at least try a few things to see what helps me, I can later go to the professor and tell him what I found to be helpful. That way, I'll probably get a much faster diagnosis from him (which will also involve fewer appointments with him and thus be much cheaper).
Thank you very much
-Shlomo

I recently recovered from vertigo
It lasted 6 months
Now I suffer from intermittent hearing loss
Has my ear been damaged by what ever caused the vertigo??
I've been told to wear a hearing aid, but as my hearing comes and goes I would much prefer to find out the cause.
Why does it come and go??

My daughter just turned 7 and beginning at her 6 year annual appointment she has failed numerous hearing screenings at 1000 Hz in both ears. Most recently she also failed 500Hz in one ear as well. For the past year we screened her every few months and after about 6 months I took her for a full audio exam which she was within normal limits but not exceptional hearing. Over the past few months she has begun "correcting" us when she thinks we have mispronounced words but we are actually saying the words correctly and I think she is missing sounds especially the middles of words and the softer sounds. Her Ped thinks she may have guessed her way through the spoken part because they used kid words and she is a highly intelligent and intuitive child and he just does not see such consistent failure of hearing screenings bilaterally among kids with "normal" hearing. The only health issues she has had was severe maternal undiagnosed gestational diabetes resulting in her birthweight being 11 lbs at 38 weeks gestation. She also had severe pneumonia at age 5 and she took much higher than normal dose of zithromax for 10 days. She failed her infant hearing screening but passed a rescreeening the next day. If we can't quantify a loss does it not exist? Beyond just doing a full retest is there a better way to figure out this kind of odd middle range loss? Neither the Dr nor I can figure out the right course of action if she's not failing the full test but functionally doesn't seem to be hearing properly.
Thanks!!
Ann

When I was 8 years old I was given a diagnoses of a severed auditory nerve due to case of the mumps as an infant. I have total hearing Loss in my left Ear. I am now 38, and over the last few years have found it to be quite socially isolating for me, as I cannot hear in a crowd, or in a room with ambient noise. Up until now I have never felt compelled to do anything about it. I remember being told by my mother years ago, when I was 10 or twelve that there was a device that I could use, but it was very incumbering, and I had little use for that. Isn't there a procedure, or a smaller device that hs replaced the one my mother was speaking of 26 years ago? I'm tired of saying"huh?" or Pardon, or "what?!!" Even worse, to have people think I am rude or stand- offish when they think they are being ignored.
help a gal out!!!!
